Team In Training Kickoff
I arrived at our first practice for TNT full of excitement to meet my new teamates and start on our journey toward the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Fransico in October. I knew I was going to meet amazing people who were coming together for one cause, to run for a cure.
Let’s just say the day didn’t disappoint. The weather was crazy before the run: rain, sun, wind, rain, wind sun…Just wait 5 minutes and it would change. But for the run the sun came out and the wind died down as if we were being blessed for our inagural run for the cause
Amy and Andriene were already there when I arrived (and no Amy I was not late you were just super early). As I was talking to my buds I saw a familiar face arrive. Jana, who I know from work (she worked for the City of U.P.) was there!! We had talked years ago about doing some event together….Now look where we are. I am really looking forward to having her on the team. She is a fun and sweet person.
After a meeting with our coaches, Andriene and Chip, we headed out for an easy 30 minute run. I must admit that only going for 30 mins was going to be hard for me…I wanted MORE. But I knew too that I had a long run to do on Sunday, so easy does it.
A group of 5 of us started getting into a steady pace when the ‘excitement’ happened. I tell ya, there is always a bloggable moment on my runs. As we headed up ‘I’ street we began to run by a store with a man and his dog standing outside. I like dogs and really didn’t think anything of him being there. Adrienne smiled at the dog and said “Hey puppy!” Well that grumpy ass dog didn’t take kindly to her friendly greeting. He decided to jump at and bite Misty. It happened so fast we all just stopped and stood for a minute and looked at each other like “What the hell just happened?’
The dog’s owners were just as shocked. No one really knew what to say, but I had to giggle a bit when the man’s wife looked at him and said, “Umm, would you put the dog in the car..now!” Misty did a great job of keeping her composure (she did admit later that she almost lost it). We flagged down Coach A. Uh yeah, Coach, I know this is our first practice and all, but we’d thought we’d start it off with a bang…
With Misty in good hands (it was not a bad bite. Skin broken a bit with some bruising), we finished out our run and everyone was all smiles at the end.
We ended the day with a fundraising ‘clinic’ “The how squeeze money out of your friends, family, and co-workers class” I jest, it was informative. Fundraising scares me just a wee bit…ok more than a wee bit. But I am in this for the cause and will make a solid effort at this aspect of the journey. So if you are reading this….GIVE ME MONEY!!!!
We also got to meet our two honored teamates and hear their inspiring story and it confirmed why I am doing this.
I RUN BECAUSE I CAN AND I RUN FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T!!!!!
I am looking forward to next week’s practice.
